*Call to Worship (inspired by Mary Oliver’s “What I have learned so far”)

Come! Pay attention! The Holy One is here!

God, reveal your presence among us today

Kindle in us a passion for the just and holy

so that we commit our labor to its cause

The gospel of light calls to us in the crossroads

Indolence, or action?

May we choose action

and be ignited.

*Hymn: “God of Love and God of Power” UMC Hymnal #578

Communal Prayer

Lord of light and life, you ignited a fire in Zachariah, Mary, and John, you burned so brightly in Jesus that some could not bear it. Kindle that same flame within us, that we too zealously yearn for your Kingdom. Usher us safely through the conflicts and heartaches to the realization of your peace. Amen.

Scripture Reading: Luke 12:49-53

“I came to cast fire upon the earth. How I wish that it was already ablaze! I have a baptism I must experience. How I am distressed until it’s completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, I have come instead to bring division. From now on, a household of five will be divided—three against two and two against three. Father will square off against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother; and mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

For the Word of God in Scripture

For the Word of God within us

For the Word of God around us

we say:

All: Thanks be to God!

Community Prayers

Leader: God in your mercy

People: Hear our prayer

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our tresspasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
Holy Communion.
You are invited and welcome to participate in communion with us. Please find something to eat and something to drink (like bread and a beverage) and follow along in the liturgy (on the screen). Congregational responses are in bold. After the prayers we will all be invited to eat and to drink together.

Music: “See How Great a Flame Aspires” performed by Nathan Flanigan (adapted from Charles Wesley)

Benediction: “On Eagles Wings”

And God will raise us up

On eagles’ wings

Bear us on the breath of dawn

Make us to shine like the sun

And hold us, in the palm, of God’s hand
